Our History

At Rothman’s, we always remember the past. Harry Rothman was a retail legend. Harry started with a pushcart on Delancey Street in 1926 and over 60 years built one of the country’s foremost discount clothing stores. Harry was the first to buy excess merchandise from top manufacturers at discount prices. His model has been replicated so often over the years that only the “old-timers” remember who created it. Harry was the man. When he passed away in 1985 and the store closed its doors, he was remembered fondly as a giant in the retail industry.

Harry’s grandson, Ken Giddon, a former bond trader, saw potential in launching a new version of his grandfather’s business. Ken opened Rothman’s Union Square in 1986, and was soon joined by his brother, Jim. The store began as an upscale discounter, and over the years has evolved into a very different operation focusing on high end men’s apparel. An additional location was opened in Scarsdale in 2003. Today, with our brand new 11,000 square feet flagship at 18th St and Park, we look to bring men the finest clothing from established and emerging designers. Harry’s emphasis on value is in the company’s DNA. We relish the challenge of finding the best men’s clothing available, and never forget that Harry is looking on, ensuring that there is true value in the items selected for our customers. One more thing we like to keep in mind, as Harry used to remind his staff: “have a sense of humor about this business. We ain’t curing any sick people, we are just selling pants.”
